4th of July Pet Safety Tips
The 4th of July weekend is a time for celebration in Chattanooga and across the country, but it can be a stressful and dangerous time for our pets. At Southside Veterinary Clinic, we want to help you keep your pets safe, calm, and healthy during the holiday.
Here’s what you need to know:
Watch Out for Heat
It’s hot in the Tennessee Valley this time of year. If you missed it, check out Dr. Lindsey’s recent video on managing heat with your pets. In short:
Keep pets indoors during peak heat
Provide fresh water at all times
Walk during cooler parts of the day
Watch for signs of overheating and related illnesses like excessive panting and/or changes in behavior
Fireworks and Noise Safety
Fireworks are a staple of the 4th of July, but they can be terrifying for pets. Here’s how to protect them:
Do not bring pets to fireworks shows, whether big municipal shows or even ones on your street and in your neighborhood.
Keep pets indoors in a quiet area with background noise (fan, TV, or music)
Remember that backyard fireworks can happen anytime over the weekend
Even daytime fireworks can startle pets, so keep dogs leashed when outdoors, even for a quick potty break. Startled pets can run away, get lost, or get injured by vehicles or other animals.
Microchip and Identification Checks
The 4th of July is one of the most common times for pets to go missing. Check that:
✅ Your pet’s microchip is registered and up to date
✅ Your pet’s collar and ID tags are secure
If your pet isn’t microchipped, give us a call at Southside Veterinary Clinic. We can help get your pet microchipped for peace of mind.
Calming Aids and Medication
There are over-the-counter products marketed for noise aversion that may help calm your pet, but their effectiveness can vary. If your pet has severe anxiety around fireworks, call us to discuss whether medication may be appropriate to keep your pet calm and safe during the holiday.
