Treating Seasonal Allergies for Pets

Seasonal Allergies Are Rough This Summer — Here’s What to Know

Every summer at our veterinary clinic in Chattanooga, we see a wave of pets struggling with seasonal allergies — and this year, it’s been particularly bad. Ragweed is out in full force, and it’s leaving a lot of our patients miserable.

If your dog or cat has been extra itchy lately, there’s a good chance they’re reacting to something in the environment.

Common Pet Allergy Symptoms

Allergies in pets don’t always look the same as they do in humans. Here’s what to watch for:

  • Excessive scratching or licking

  • Chewing at paws or skin

  • Red, irritated ears

  • Shaking their head

  • Changes in mood or behavior due to discomfort

Some pets may only show mild signs, while others develop more persistent issues that require treatment.

What’s Causing It?

Pets can be sensitive to a variety of environmental and food-related allergens, including:

  • Tree pollen

  • Grass seed

  • Ragweed

  • Dust mites

  • Even the protein in their food

Identifying the root cause of the allergy symptoms can be difficult, but we’re here to help.

How We Treat Allergies at Southside

We offer a range of treatment options depending on the severity of your pet’s symptoms, including:

  • Medications to relieve itching and inflammation

  • Ear treatments for allergy-related infections

  • Referrals to a dermatologist for long-term allergy management

Sometimes, a short-term solution is all they need to get through allergy season. Other times, we work together to come up with a plan for managing chronic issues.
